Output Redirect Reference
| Redirect | Effect |
|---|---|
| > /dev/null 2>&1 | Discard ALL output (stdout + stderr) — no email, no log |
| > /dev/null | Discard stdout only; stderr still sent as email |
| 2> /dev/null | Discard stderr only; stdout still sent as email |
| >> /var/log/job.log 2>&1 | Append all output to a log file |
| >> /var/log/job.log 2>> /var/log/job-err.log | Append stdout and errors to separate log files |
MAILTO="" at the top of a crontab silences all email for every job in that file.
Set MAILTO=user@host to route all output to a specific address instead.

Log Rotation with logrotate
# /etc/logrotate.d/mycron
/var/log/mycron.log {
daily
rotate 14
compress
delaycompress
missingok
notifempty
create 0640 youruser youruser
}
Apply with:
sudo logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/mycron — prevents log files from consuming
all disk space.
