OSPF Config Generator
Build OSPF router configurations with networks and options
What is OSPF?
Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is a link‑state routing protocol used inside an autonomous system. Routers share link information and compute the best paths using SPF (Dijkstra).
- OSPF divides the network into areas; Area 0 is the backbone.
- Routers flood LSAs so every router has the same topology database.
- Cost is usually based on bandwidth; lower cost = preferred path.
Key OSPF Concepts
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Process ID | Locally significant number identifying the OSPF instance. |
| Router ID | Unique 32‑bit ID per router, often a loopback IP. |
| Area | Logical group of networks to keep SPF calculations smaller. |
| Passive interface | Advertises network but does not form OSPF neighbors. |
| Reference bandwidth | Used to calculate interface cost from link speed. |
Design Tips for New Engineers
- Use a loopback interface as the Router ID for stability.
- Keep the design simple at first: a single backbone plus a few leaf areas.
- Make user‑facing interfaces passive to avoid unwanted neighbors.
